What to Expect During a Custom Engagement Ring Consultation at Bellisa Jewellery

What to Expect During a Custom Engagement Ring Consultation at Bellisa Jewellery

Most clients do not come into a custom engagement ring consultation knowing exactly what they want—and they do not need to.

Some have saved one ring on Pinterest and want to use it as a starting point. Others have several inspiration photos, each with a completely different detail they like. One person may already know they want an oval lab-grown diamond but still be deciding between a solitaire and a hidden halo. Another may have a very specific idea for a nature-inspired engagement ring but need help determining whether it can be made in a way that is comfortable and durable enough for everyday wear.

That is exactly what the consultation is for.

At Bellisa Jewellery, all custom engagement ring consultations are conducted by scheduled phone call. During the call, we talk through your ideas, inspiration, budget, stone preferences, lifestyle, and timeline to help turn those early thoughts into a clear design direction.

You do not need to have every decision made before we speak. Whether you are planning a fully bespoke engagement ring or simply want to customize one of our existing designs, the consultation is designed to help you understand your options and decide what makes the most sense for you.

Before Your Phone Consultation: What Should You Prepare?

You do not need a finished design or a list of technical jewellery specifications before booking a consultation.

In fact, many custom projects begin with only one or two clear preferences.

You may know that your partner loves oval stones. You may have a budget range in mind. Perhaps you have saved a leaf engagement ring but want the band to feel more substantial. Or maybe you like the side profile of one ring, the band from another, and the centre stone shape from a third.

That is enough to start.

Before your scheduled phone consultation, it can be helpful to think about:

  • Any inspiration photos, screenshots, links, or Bellisa designs you like

  • Your preferred centre stone shape, if you have one

  • Whether you are considering moissanite, lab-grown diamond, or a coloured gemstone

  • Your approximate budget

  • Your preferred timeline

  • Any lifestyle considerations that may affect the design

  • Whether you want a future wedding band to sit flush with the engagement ring

Do not worry if you do not know all of these things yet. Part of our role is helping you narrow down the options.

How to Share Inspiration for Your Phone Consultation

Because our consultations are conducted by phone, clients can send inspiration photos, screenshots, product links, or drawings to us by email before/during the scheduled call.

Having these references available allows us to discuss the specific details you are drawn to while we speak.

You may love the band from one design, the setting height from another, and the centre stone shape from a third. Talking through each reference helps us understand which elements actually matter most to you.

We are not only looking at the ring as a whole. We may ask questions such as:

  • Is it the centre stone shape that you like?

  • Do you prefer the low-profile setting?

  • Is the tapered band the detail that caught your attention?

  • Do you like the leaf or floral elements?

  • Are you drawn to the prong orientation?

  • Is it the overall vintage, organic, or minimalist feeling?

Sometimes a client initially thinks they want a particular ring, but after talking through the reference images, we realize that only one or two details are actually essential to them.

That gives us much more freedom to create something personal instead of simply copying an existing design.

It is also completely normal for new ideas to come up during the consultation. You may begin the call thinking you want one design and realize, after discussing setting height, wedding-band fit, stone proportions, or budget, that another direction makes more sense.

Additional inspiration can always be sent by email after the call. The goal is not to finalize every detail during one conversation. It is to establish a clear enough direction for us to prepare the next step.

We Start With the Overall Design Direction

During the consultation, we usually begin by understanding the overall look and feeling you are trying to achieve.

Some clients are drawn to a clean solitaire engagement ring. Others want something more detailed, such as a hidden halo, vintage-inspired design, three-stone ring, cluster setting, or nature-inspired engagement ring.

You do not need to know the names of every type of engagement ring setting. We can help translate what you like visually into the technical details required to create the ring.

For example, you may tell us that you want:

  • Something low and comfortable for everyday wear

  • A larger centre stone without the ring feeling too bulky

  • A setting that allows a wedding band to sit flush

  • A delicate appearance without sacrificing structural durability

  • A vintage feeling without making the ring look overly antique

  • Nature-inspired details that still feel refined and wearable

Those preferences are often more useful than simply choosing a style category.

We Talk About How the Ring Will Actually Be Worn

A beautiful engagement ring still needs to work for everyday life.

That is why we often discuss lifestyle as well as appearance.

Someone who frequently works with their hands may prefer a lower-profile or more protected setting. A client who plans to wear a straight wedding band may need a different basket structure than someone who is comfortable with a small gap between the two rings.

Some design choices also involve trade-offs.

A very low-set engagement ring can feel secure and comfortable, but depending on the basket structure, it may not allow a straight wedding band to sit completely flush.

A higher cathedral setting may provide more clearance for a wedding band, but the centre stone will sit higher on the finger.

A very thin band may create a delicate look, but depending on the centre stone size and overall construction, we may recommend increasing the width slightly for better long-term durability.

These are the kinds of details that are difficult to judge from a single product photo.

During the consultation, we can explain the advantages and limitations of different options before the design moves forward.

Choosing the Centre Stone

For many clients, the centre stone is one of the biggest decisions.

Bellisa works with moissanite, lab-grown diamonds, and selected natural and lab-grown coloured gemstones. The right option depends on what matters most to you.

A client looking for maximum sparkle and strong value may choose moissanite. Someone who wants a real diamond while achieving a larger size or higher specifications within budget may prefer a lab-grown diamond. Others are drawn to sapphire, emerald, alexandrite, or another coloured gemstone because they want something less traditional.

We do not approach every consultation with the same recommendation.

Instead, we look at:

  • The overall ring design

  • Your preferred stone size

  • Your budget

  • The visual characteristics you like

  • Whether diamond identity is important to you

  • Your preferred shape and proportions

For example, someone researching moissanite rings in Toronto may be deciding between a larger oval moissanite and a smaller lab-grown diamond.

Another client may already know they want an IGI-certified lab-grown diamond ring but need help understanding colour, clarity, cut, proportions, and which specifications are worth paying more for.

Those are very different conversations.

If you are still comparing stone types, our Complete Guide to Moissanite Engagement Rings and Complete Guide to Lab-Grown Diamond Engagement Rings can help you understand the differences in more detail.

How Budget Shapes the Design

Talking about the budget is not about pushing the design higher.

It helps us understand where the money should go.

Two engagement rings with the same overall budget can look completely different depending on what the client values most.

One person may prefer to put more of the budget toward a larger centre stone and keep the setting simple.

Another may choose a slightly smaller stone so they can include a more intricate band, custom engraving, coloured accent stones, or a detailed nature-inspired design.

With a custom engagement ring, several elements can affect the final price:

  • Centre stone type and size

  • Metal choice

  • Accent stones

  • Pavé or halo details

  • Band width and structure

  • Complexity of the custom design

Knowing the approximate budget early helps us recommend the strongest version of the design within that range instead of creating a concept that later needs to be completely reworked.

You do not need to arrive with an exact number, but having a general range is very helpful.

What Happens After the Phone Consultation?

Once the design direction is clear, we summarize the key details and prepare a quote based on the selected design, materials, stone preferences, and customization requirements.

For some projects, we may also source specific gemstone or diamond options for you to review.

When you are ready to proceed, a 50% deposit is required to begin the order.

Our design team will then create a detailed mock-up rendering report of the ring for your review.

This is one of the most important stages of the bespoke process.

The CAD allows you to review details such as:

  • Overall proportions

  • Band width

  • Setting height

  • Stone orientation

  • Prong placement

  • Accent stone layout

  • Gallery structure

  • Side profile

You will have the opportunity to review the design and request adjustments before approving it for production.

This is especially valuable for a completely custom engagement ring, because small differences in proportions can noticeably change how the finished ring looks and feels.

Once the CAD is approved, the ring moves into production.

Bellisa engagement rings are handcrafted in Toronto, Canada, and our typical production timeline is approximately four weeks, depending on the design. We provide regular production updates throughout the process so you can follow the progress of your ring from start to finish.

The remaining balance is due before the completed ring is shipped.

Do You Need a Consultation for Every Ring?

Not necessarily.

If you already know exactly which Bellisa design, stone option, metal, and ring size you want, you may be able to place your order directly through the website.

A phone consultation is most helpful when:

  • You want to customize an existing Bellisa design

  • You are deciding between several stone options

  • You are unsure which setting will work best for your lifestyle

  • You have multiple inspiration images and need help combining them

  • You want a fully bespoke engagement ring

  • You have questions about budget, proportions, or stone size

  • You are not sure where to begin

Some clients book a consultation before they have chosen a ring.

Others contact us after finding a Bellisa design they already love but want to change one or two details.

Both are completely normal.

Questions We Hear Often During Custom Consultations

Do I need to know exactly what I want before booking?

No. Many clients book a consultation because they need help narrowing down their options. Having inspiration is useful, but a fully developed design is not required.

Is the consultation in person?

No. Bellisa’s custom engagement ring consultations are conducted by scheduled phone call. Inspiration images, links, and other references can be shared with us by email before, during, or after the consultation.

Can I send inspiration photos?

Yes. You can send photos, screenshots, links, drawings, or other references by email. It is especially helpful to tell us which specific elements you like in each image.

Can you customize an existing Bellisa design?

Yes. Many bespoke projects begin with an existing Bellisa ring and involve changes to the centre stone, band, setting, accent stones, metal, or other design details.

Can you work within a specific budget?

Yes. Having a budget range helps us recommend the best combination of stone, materials, and design details for your priorities.

Can I choose the exact lab-grown diamond?

Depending on the project, we can provide available stone options for review. Qualifying lab-grown diamonds are accompanied by an IGI grading report, and additional videos or information may also be provided before you make your selection.

What if I want changes after seeing the CAD?

You will have an opportunity to review the CAD and request adjustments before the design is approved for production.

How long does a custom engagement ring take?

Our typical production timeline is approximately four weeks after the design is finalized, although more complex projects or additional services may require extra time.

Is a Custom Engagement Ring Consultation Right for You?

A consultation is most valuable when you want guidance rather than simply another product page to browse.

You may already know that you want an oval stone but not whether it should be set low or high.

You may have a specific budget but be unsure whether to put more of it toward the centre stone or the setting.

You may love a ring online but want to change several details so it feels more personal.

Those are exactly the kinds of decisions we work through during a consultation.

The goal is not to make the process more complicated. It is to make sure the ring you eventually choose makes sense for the person who will actually wear it.

Begin Your Custom Engagement Ring Journey

Every bespoke ring begins differently.

Sometimes it starts with a detailed sketch. Sometimes it starts with one saved photo.

Sometimes it begins with a client saying, “I know what she likes, but I do not know what any of it is called.”

That is enough.

Bellisa Jewellery creates bespoke and handcrafted engagement rings in Canada, including custom moissanite, lab-grown diamond, and coloured gemstone designs.

Book a complimentary phone consultation with our design team to discuss your ideas, budget, stone preferences, and timeline. We will help you turn your inspiration into a clear design direction and guide you through the next steps of creating your ring.
